Fun Facts of the Mara

1. As you walk up the rope bridge toward the temple entrance, on the right, there are two stone tablets.
   • The first reads THE GATES OF DOOM.
   • The second is nearer the end of the bridge and back in the foliage it reads IF YOU DARE TO LOOK INTO THE EYE OF MARA YOU SHALL BE INCINERATED.
2. Above the entrance to the temple it reads: BEWARE THE EYE OF MARA.
3. Immediately inside the temple there is a mural of Mara showing the three destinies. Beginning to the right of the mural and reading from left to right in a circle it reads: LOOK NOT INTO THE EYE OF MARA AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF ETERNAL YOUTH EARTHLY RICHES OR FUTURE KNOWLEDGE.
4. On the ante room wall to the left as you leave the first chamber it reads: IT IS FORBIDDEN TO PASS BEYOND THIS CHAMBER WITHOUT A SERVANT OF MARA TO GUIDE YOUR PATH HEED THIS WARNING OR RISK INCURRING THE WRATH OF MARA FOR DOOM AWAITS THE UNBELIEVER IN THE DARKNESS BEYOND.
5. At the end of the first hallway you reach the chamber containing the Obelisk of Doom. On the walls are scattered letters that are reported to be the initials of the Imagineers or the finishers. I can't confirm this. The four sides of the obelisk warn of the dangers that lie ahead:
   • THE SERPENT,
   • THE MUMMIES,
   • THE FALLING RATS,
   • THE HALL OF SPIKES.
6. As you work your way through the hallway you come to a sign that reads Danger Flooded Maze. On the wall next to it is a stone tablet, and above that it reads: ONLY THE BLIND SHALL SEE.
7. As you venture on you come to a sitting buddha type statue and above it reads: EARTHLY RICHES.
8. When you reach the two drinking fountains,
   • the inscription above them reads: ONLY ONE SPRING CAN RESTORE YOUTH AND VIGOR CHOOSE WISELY.
   • To the right on the north wall it reads: DRINK DEEPLY THE WATER OF LIFE.
9. When you leave the water fountains you start downhill via the Avenue of Voices. About thirty or forty meters along the queue near the ceiling on either side are inscriptions. they are difficult to see.
   • On the left side it reads THE EYE OF MARA NEVER SLEEPS.
   • On the right side it reads THE EYE OF MARA SEES DECEIT.
10. Along the queue on both sides are stones that protrude from the wall itself and on them is the letter M placed sideways to form a pattern. Before you get to the double wooden doors on either side of the queue look again near the ceiling on both sides.
    • On the left it reads FORTUNE FAVORS THE PURE OF HEART.
    • Above on the right it reads LOOK NOT WITH YOUR EYES BUT WITH YOUR HEART.
11. As you approach the double doors directly in front of you on the wall the painted inscription reads TRUE REWARDS AWAIT THOSE WHO CHOOSE WISELY.
12. Just before you enter the bat caverns there is an inscription that has missing words (it has the appearance of having been blasted away to create an opening). I will lay them out as they appear on the wall. The capital letters are actually there and the lower case letters are what I believe complete some of the missing pieces.

13. Once inside the bat caverns you can hear the bats, if you listen carefully, but you won't see any. When you approach the next hallway there is a large stone wheel propped against the wall. It reads THE GATES OF DOOM ARE EVER OPEN.
14. The Hall of Spikes lies just beyond. This is one of the only effects from the original artist sketches that exists today. At this point you are actually passing under the Disneyland Railroad tracks. On the left, about three quarters of the way down the hallway is a bamboo pole with a sign next to it reading "Caution Do Not Touch Pole." If someone pulls on the pole it triggers a booby trap that makes the ceiling of spikes drop about eight or ten inches, along with a sound effect that sends chills up your spine. It was intended to disguise the sound of trains passing overhead.
15. When you leave the Hall of Spikes there is a sign that says "Do Not Step On Diamond Shaped Stones." This is the Hall of Descending Blocks. Some of the blocks have already been tripped, but on the bottom of the ones that remain shored up is the amulet of future knowledge.
16. You will now enter the Rotunda Room. In the center of the room lies the Calendar Sarcophagus. The painted inscription reads in a circle
    • from left to right at the top THE PURE OF HEART ARE PROTECTED BENEATH THE WATCHFUL EYE OF MARA.
    • From left to right at the bottom WOE TO THE UNWORTHY WHO PASS BENEATH.
    • The four corners read PLOW THE FIELD / PLANT THE SEED / REAP THE HARVEST / TRIBUTE TO MARA.
    • On the far side of the calendar is a rope with a sign cautioning not to pull on it. If you choose to ignore the warning, the archaeologist below will say one of the following phrases:
      • "Leave off the rope old chap. Be a good fellow. I have a frightfully valuable artifact down here. Oh no (crash!). I had a terribly valuable artifact down here."
      • "I say, leave off the rope old chap. Be a jolly good sport. I say, uh oh.. oh no.. blimey.....(fall/thud)"
      • "I say, quit mucking about up there. Oh blast, not again..(fall/clank)"
      • "Blast it all. You don't want to pull the rope. (crash) Oh dear."
      • "Careful while I translate this. Lets see 20 years of sorrow to the destroyer of this vessel (crash)."
17. When you pass the calendar you make a quick jog and come to a large support pillar. To it's left are two barrels, one on top of the other. If you stand just to the left of the barrels and look at the lower left hand corner of the doorway leading to the Alter Room there is a stone tablet on the floor. When viewed from this position, you will see a silhouette of Mickey Mouse. When you enter the Alter Room (if you thought to bring a flashlight) if you look almost to the ceiling, in the rafters, there is an Eeyore parking lot sign on it's side. Under the projection screen lies the altar, upon which three tablets rest. The inscription below the tablets reads BEHOLD THE GIFTS OF MARA. The tablets read:
    • THE CHAMBER OF EARTHLY RICHES
    • WEALTH BEYOND YOUR WILDEST IMAGINATION LIES WITHIN AND IS YOURS FOR THE TAKING BUT BEWARE THE EYES OF MARA
    • THE OBSERVATORY OF THE FUTURE
    • THE FOUNTAIN OF ETERNAL YOUTH
    • ONE SIP FROM THE ETERNAL SPRING SHALL RENEW VIGOR AND YOUTHFUL SPIRIT BUT BEWARE THE EYES OF MARA
    • BEHOLD THE AMULET OF MARA AND YOU SHALL SEE VISIONS OF THE FUTURE BUT BEWARE THE EYES OF MARA
18. When you leave the Altar Room you will see a screened in office directly in front of you.
    • Above the door is stenciled the numbers 990 6753 . This is the number stenciled on the crate containing The Ark of the Covenant, as it is being moved through the massive government warehouse, in the final scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark (the first Indiana Jones movie).
    • To the left is a bulletin board with a map of the temple, some notes, and several telegrams posted.
    • On your right, under the last office window is stenciled Deliver to Club Obi Wan (the name of the cafe in the second movie: The Temple of Doom).
19. As you head up the ramp (right before the line splits into two and goes up the stairs) to where you first see the transport vehicles, on the wall to the left the inscription reads ONLY THE PURE OF HEART SHALL GAIN ADMITTANCE INTO THE CHAMBER OF DESTINY.
20. After you climb the stairs and turn left, on the wall to the right, the inscription reads MARA SHALL GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE DOORWAY OF YOUR MOST SECRET DESIRE IN THE CHAMBER OF DESTINY.
21. When you descend the stairs and are ready to board your transport on the wall on both sides is the same inscription BEWARE THE EYE OF MARA ONE LOOK WILL LEAD THROUGH THE TUNNEL OF TORMENT TO THE GATES OF DOOM.
