Stories Behind the Scenes

Fantasyland

Every time I go to Disneyland me and my Grandpa go on Pinocchio's Journey when my brothers and sisters go on Casey Jr. and after the ride we mimick Pinocchoi's dad so we yell "pinocchoi" The cast members seem to enjoy that . It lightens the mod. You should try it!

The Disney Princesses (as well as any face characters) are all Union Actors, not just any cast members! The Fantastic Four (Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, and Snow White) can all be viewed around 11:00 a.m. in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle for photo/picture opportunities just before storyime in Tinkerbell's Toy Shoppe. As I was on my way from the courtyard to the shoppe via the far left pathway, a shy little girl came up to me and asked for a picture. Her parents followed and just as they were about to take the picture, the little girl vomited all over my skirt. On the upside, wardrobe usually has anywhere from 2-4 face costumes (not including parade specials) for each principal character. Thank goodness for that! In addition to strict height requirements, all disney characters (face and mask) are given guidelines for "autographs" so each autograph resembles the same one written by your predecessor a few years ago. Actors come in all shapes and sizes, but a name is a name!

On ONE of our familys week long trips to Disneyland, we happend to get stranded on the Casey Jones? ride. A bird happened to land on the train tracks and this triggered the train to stop. All the other passengers in other trains were able to exit onto ramps, but we were over a tressel!! We were in that car for about 45min-1hr! Not bad but in hot sun!! We were having a great time! Cast members brought us cold waters and we took pictures!! A vip also came to the ride and gave eachone of us passes to get to the front of any ride (3!). Thanks Disneyland for a job well done!

I believe this was in Fantasyland, though I'm not positive because I was probably around 5 years old at the time. I was very excited to meet "Snow White" in person....then I noticed she had a watch on! It was small and pretty, but obviously a modern watch. I asked her about it, and I don't remember exactly what she said, but she avoided answering it. (Probably something along the lines of, "Never-mind, sweetie...") It wasn't until recently (15 years later) that I learned that was a BIG no-no for her.....

A couple years back, my family and I went to Disneyland and stuck around for the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks. When they began, Tinkerbell came flying down from the top of the Matterhorn to start the fireworks and appearently she goofed cause one of the fireworks hit her and she caught fire !!! This is true!! There were many witnesses (all of them laughing)!!

It all happened at the Mad Hatter Tea Party ride on Labor Day weekend. I wanted things to be special for us. It meant a lot to me and I knew it mean a lot to my girlfriend. After getting help from my cousin, Renee, to purchase a wedding ring I planned on asking Al if she would marry me while we were in Disneyland. This place is very important to us and I knew this was an experience she and I would always remember. Our friends Carol, Carlos, and Debbie were there for support, but they didn't know about anything until that morning when I showed them the ring and told them of my intentions. After being so nervous for the first half of the day we finally wound up at the Mad Hatter ride. When our group ran with excitement to their favorite cups I leaned over the the operator and asked if I could have a minute to propose to my girlfriend. I then walked over to the purple cup and took a deep breathe in. Al kept telling me to hurry, but by then I was numb and nervous. I went down to one knee and asked her for her hand in marriage. I was so nervous I couldn't hear her and so I yelled to her again and asked her for her hand in marriage. She said yes and we both hugged and kissed. I was still very nervous and in doing so accidently dropped the ring to the bottom of the cup(fortunately there was no holes in the cup.) All I could hear was Carlos yelling, "I told you not to drop the ring!" Before the ride started the ride operator congratulated us over the intercom. That is a very special day in our lives. We had friends to share it with and kind people all around(especially those cast members.) This definitely is our happiest place on earth.

This may be a little corny, but I'll tell it anyway. On one of my many trips to Disneyland, my family & I went on the Skyway. Just as me, my friends,& sister got off at Fantasyland, the Skyway broke down, as it sometimes did, and my parents and other sister were about two buckets behind us. They were just minding their own business, when some person in the bucket across from them turned and asked "Pardon me,but do you have any Grey Poupon?". Oviously you know the reply to that one. This is completly of the subject, but have you ever counted the hats on top of the buildings when you flew by? Once I saw a deck of cards there. Or it might have been on Peter Pan's Flight. The world might never know.

Caset Jr.

From: AR 08 AUG 99

About fifteen years ago, my dad was one the Casey Jr. train, when he fell on it and hurt his leg. Because it hurt so much, he went to a doctor after he left, and that's when he found out he had a tumor in his leg! It was successfully removed, but if he hadn't have fallen, they might never have found it. You might say that he ows his life to that train!

Snow White's Scary Adventures

From: anon 17 MAY 97

I tell this story in fear that I may get busted by Disneyland, my most favorite of all places in the world, but figured it must be told because it was one of the scariest nights of my life! Last summer, a group of 25 co-workers of mine and myself, went to DL for the day. Four of us seperated from the group and decided to go on Snow White's Scary Adventure before closing time. I had read on this very web page that one of the apples on the ride was "takeable", if you will -- with a number assigned to it and everything. The two men in my group decided, since it wasn't busy, that we would put ourselves on a mission to get that apple. We were all excited and rode the ride once to check out the goods, scoping out possible apples, and low and behold, we spotted it! So, since the ride had been breaking down frequently that night and the CMs seemed like they weren't paying too much attention, we rode it again and VICTORY! We scored the apple from the evil queen (now in witch form) as she came at us with the apple on her boat! It's a cheap plastic flourescent thing with no number on it, we were scared to death that we would be accosted by DL Security, but it was worth it! Now we have a 'treasure' to last a lifetime! Thinking we would get another one, two of us decided to go back this year and, guess what? The boat no longer comes out as far as it did and thus the apple is no longer so easily accessable. Do you know if too many people were taking these apples and this is why she was moved back...or if there is even a security camera there? Let me know! The Seperatists Rule! MPB.ARC.ATH.JHS.OS96. About seven years ago, a friend of mine went with me to Disneyland and we decided to ride Snow White, because there was no line and it was about 100 degrees. While we were going through the dark forest section of the ride, the whole thing stopped without noise or any movement. My friend and I were wondering what we should do after ten minutes, until the lights went on and an operator came to get us out. She said that there was a problem that had to do with the heat in the electrical system. We walked the rest of the way through and I must say, the ride looks completely different with light. All the trees and set features are literally made with cheap materials.

Pinocchio's Daring Journey

From: MSNOOKAL 23 FEB 96

We went to the passholder's party 2/2/96. There was a walk-thru of Pinocchio's with Cast Members available to answer questions. One in particular was not very cheerful and loudly complained about the repeated questions about HMs. He vehemently denied that there was any such thing in that ride or any other. None of the other Cast Members knew of a Hidden Mickey, either (though they weren't so rude about it). Maybe we'll clue them in.

From: Tina Marie 01 NOV 98

In February of 1998, I went to Disneyland with my mom for three days. It was the first day we were there and it rained the day before so there was nobody and I mean NOBODY there. We were bored (yes, bored at Disneyland) so we decided to ride Pinocchio for the 6th time that day. There was no one in line so we just walked straight on the ride. We were on the ride and as we were passing things we decided to reach out and try to touch things. We touched opening doors as we passed and that's about it. Towards the end of the ride Jiminy Cricket is standing there on a shelf holding his concience badge. I decided to reach out and try to touch the shelf and a loud recorded voice came on and said "Please keep your hands and arms inside the car and remain seated at all times!" I was so scared that my hands were in my lap every second for every other ride I rode. The next time I rode Pinocchio I looked underneath the shelf and saw a small red sensor. I must have set off the sensor. I have also noticed a red sensor on Snow White's Scary Adventures behind a bucket of jewels when you are passing through the mine.

Peter Pan Flight

From: Chris Carnicelli 13 JAN 97

I got a real treat when a handicapped person's trouble getting off the Peter Pan Flight stalled the ride to the point where our flying boat (as well as everyone else inside the ride) got stuck! A voice told us to stay calm and that the ride would resume soon. It didn't. After five minutes, the house lights came on as a a computer had to be re-set. Our flying boat lurched ahead at 15 feet at a time as we got a first hand look at EVERYTHING hidden in the dark. All the lights, black-lights, rolled-up plastic wrap (used to similate clouds below) and tricky and not-so-tricky conveyor belts carrying "tiny little cars" along the streets. The best part came at the end: on Hook's pirate ship, on the floor of the ship were scattered playing cards, popcorn boxes, and other garbage! As we finally disembarked and the ride was back to full operation, three "suits" offered us a second trip without having to wait again. My friend and I said no, but thanked them for the "sneak peek" behind the scenes.

Sword in the Stone Ceremony

From: Steve Jaspar

This happened in December of 1996. I had never seen the "Sword in the Stone" ceremony, so we hung around to watch Merlin do his stuff. He went through his spiel and, at one point, pulled a dove from his sleeve. He explained that he would release the dove, and depending on which direction the dove flew, that would be the direction in which he would look for the rightful king. He flung the dove up into the air... up, up it went, spiraling into the sky, when suddenly a hawk swooped down and snatched the dove in mid-air! A few white feathers floated down, and the crowd watched in stunned silence as the hawk made off with its meal. Merlin, to his credit, made a quick recovery, explained that it didn't really matter which way the dove went, and proceeded to pick an heir to the throne. My friends and I later wondered if the local hawks knew what time each day to wait for a free lunch... just goes to show that 'nature will find a way' even in the Magic Kingdom. Maybe someone who's seen the ceremony lately would let me know if they still use the dove, or have they opted for a kinder, gentler way of locating the king?

From: Danny Holwerda 17 AUG 97

One of the absolute coolest moments of my entire childhood was the day that I pulled the sword from the stone at Fantasyland. I was 7 or 8 years old, and at Disneyland with my family and my godparents. We just happened to be near the sword when the ceremony began, so we decided to watch. Merlin picked two very big, strong men from the crowd to remove the sword, but neither one was able to. Then he said that maybe he should try someone younger. I didn't know at the time, but I have since found out that my mother and godmother were jumping wildly behind me, trying to draw Merlin's attention! I was wearing my soccer jersey that day, and as Merlin walked with me to the stone, I remember he asked (so that everyone could hear),"What's your name Danny?" Of course, I was so amazed that he knew my name that I totally forgot that it was on my shirt. The music started to play, and I pulled the sword as hard as I could, but it didn't move. Then Merlin said, "Well, let's give him another chance!" The music came up again, and I pulled again, climbing up to put my feet on top of the anvil that the sword goes through so that I could have more leverage. Then the sword moved! If you've seen the ceremony, you know that it doesn't come all the way out (only Arthur can do that), but I was thrilled that I had even budged it. They put the royal robe and crown on me and paraded me around for a minute or two, while Merlin told me that I was King for a day, and that I could levy a tax on everyone in Disneyland. They gave me a pin-on button (with a picture of young Arthur removing the sword from the stone) that I wore for the rest of the day. Every time we would pass near a Cast Member, they would greet me by saying, "Hello your Majesty!" It was a really awesome experience for a kid to have.

One time a friend and I were bored, as we visited the Park often and we didn't feel like going on a ride. We went over the Videopolis. This was at the time of the Beauty and the Beast stage show. We saw that the chains were down, but no further performances that night. We walked down towards the stage and saw that both large "doors" at least 20 feet in height on either side of the stage were open. So, we walked back there and found ourselves in some sort of dressing area and then onstage. My friend being much bolder than I am pranced across the stage and milked the situation for all it was worth. I then left getting worried that we might be busted by security. He followed shortly after with a few unique souveniers including a flower and some veggies.

Casey Jr. Circus Train

From: Tim Kelly 13 APR 97

A long time ago when I worked in the Casey Jr. Circus Train many times me and the other engineers would pull pranks on each other to keep from getting bored. Well on one of these pranks I removed the front windshield out of the train and waited for one of the other engineers to take the train on its run. Once it pulled out of the station I grab a cup full of the sawdust thats used if somebody throws up, then I take off to hide inside the closet area inside the tunnel under the castle. Well, once the train enters the tunnel I hold out the cup and chuck it right into his face! He was temporarily blinded so he missed the train station completely! Later on when it was my turn to take the train around I saw the engineer that I nailed with the sawdust earlier taking the fire extinguisher off the wall (it was the old kind the held water) since the windshield was still out I took out the seat and put a rain poncho on. Well about halfway through the ride you could hear water splattering against the back wall and so I keep on going then when I'm inside the tunnel he sprays me again with the rest of the extinguisher. You should have seen the look on his face when I pulled up to the station completely dry. It was hilarious!

Canal Boats

From: Manuel Caneri 24 DEC 97

I was at Disneyland with a friend in 1991 and we were waiting in line for the Storybook Canal boats when suddenly we heard some people arguing. We looked ahead in the line and this older man (probably in his early 60's) and a man in his 30's were indeed arguing out loud. All of a sudden the older man pushed the other who perceeded to fall with a large splash into the water of the Canal. The man furiously jumped out of the water and started chg the older guy clear across Fantasyland with a security guard in tow. It was pretty amusing!

For the Teacups, a repetetive and soon-to-be annoying sondtrack is played. Me and my friend were getting peeved at this high-pitched squwaking. Then, my friend asked the Alice-look-alike who was running the ride, how she dealt with the music. She said "Oh, I just sorta drone it out!" HAHA! *L*

Matterhorn Bobsleds

From: malcolm 13 MAY 06

Last christmas,I went on the matterhorn. The monsters both had santa claus hats on!!! I asked a cast member why and he told me that someone hit the tops of the monsters heads. They had hats to cover the wires. dumb huh?

Once about 2 years ago me my dad and my bro were riding the madahorn when it stoped. THis young couple in front of us started to make out!!!! Then we hered a voice from the speacker saying to plz stop becuse there are small kids around. All 3 of us started to laugh. After that we had a extra bonus throngh in. We got to walk down the whole mountian. It was cool seeing the inside of it. While we walked down with the CM he told us some interesting facts about the place!!!!

From: Christopher Thomas 18 AUG 98

Apparently, some cast members forget the "I don't know" policy whenver a guest asks a question. At this years Disneyland Grad Night (June 16, 1998), a bunch of friends and I thought up a really obscure question to ask a cast member. When we asked a castmember, who was manning the post before the Matterhorn line entered the area under the wooding coverings, how many gallons of water were pumped through the matterhorn, he gave us a big "I don't know". I was quite disappointed. Did find Club 33 though...

From: Kelie McCutchan 06 MAR 99

My dad told me that when he was in high school, there was a guy named Mar Maples who was pledging for a club. The club told him to stand up on the Matterhorn. He did, and guess what happened? His head got chopped off. So don't go standing up, ok? Oh, if you want to read the story, it's in a book called "Mouse Tales" by David Koenig.

Tinkerbell

From: Michael Heavener 22 JUL 98

When my family visited Disneyland in 1973, my mother asked a cast member what time Tinkerbell flew that night. The CM must have been in a rare mood, because his reply was ... "You mean when does the lady fall off the mountain?" Then he laughed and never did answer the question. We found out though and took pictures with my telephoto lens.

Memorable Disneyland Experience

From: Kate 01 FEB 98

I was in Disneyland with three other friends this December. We wanted to see the Small World ride decorated for the holidays. As we headed for Small World (from Matterhorn) a woman approched us. She asked us if we wanted to participate in a television show for the Disney Channel. I said yes, so to make a long story short, I ended up being the center of attention (and a big crowd) as I matched the faces of presidents to the appropriate bills. The crowd cheered for me, which I liked because I like to be the center of attention. There was a television camera on me and everything there, so the crowd must have thought I was a celebrity or an actress. Anyway, as we were leaving the park, I stopped in City Hall to say hello to a wonderful Cast Member I know. She asked us how much time we had left in the park, and we told her we had 20 minutes. She gave us 2 front of the line passes! As we raced through the park I remember thinking what a fabulous day I was having. We rode the two rides and got out to the parking lot where we waited for my mom. Knowing we were late, when Mom wasn't there I got worried. A security guard came over and said to my friends and me,"You were supposed to be here half and hour ago." Shocked, my friends and I turned around to see my mother, who had spoken to the security guard earlier. That was the absolute most amazing day! Only later was I to find out all that happened on Walt Disney's birthday!! That's the kind of thing you only dream about. I will never forget that day.

Small World

From: Scott Space Ace Oliverson 01 MAY 00

When Jason and I rode IT'S A SMALL WORLD, which was my mother's #1 attraction the last time we were in the Magic Kingdom in 1986. As we cruised along the 7 SEAS, passing by the 100 Nations or Lands, listening to the children of the world singing the theme song in various languages I would point out which country was coming up so Jason would know where we were on our tour. Here is the listing of those countries I can recall, probably in the same manner as listed on the DISNEYLAND LP IT'S A SMALL WORLD RECORD. Scandanevia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland), Alaska, Canada, Emerald Isles (Ireland), Scotland, England, Belgium, Holland, Spain & Portugal, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Russia (Former Soviet Union), Middle East (Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait), India, China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Africa, Egypt, South America (Brazil, Jamaica, Columbia, etc), Central America, Mexico, Australia, Hawaii, etc. The funny part came at the end when our boat would crash into the rear of the boat ahead of us, knocking us back an inch or two, then seconds later another boat would ram into us from our blindside. BUMPER-BOATS! However we did make it to the exit without the ride breaking down. To this day I still hear the theme song in my head!

From: Heidi Moe 21 JUL 98

On December 28th of last year, my friend Noelle and I decided to wait in the (EXTREMELY long) line for Small World because we had heard that the cool holiday changes on the ride were DEFINITELY worth the wait (And they are!!). We had just reached the front of our line when a Cast Member asked us to please wait a moment. The boat currently at the dock was filled, then an empty boat was released after that. I turned to Noelle to ask her why she thought they were doing that when I realized that there were people waiting in the handicapped ramp right next to us (right behind Noelle). As I scanned the small group of people waiting at the exit, I noticed a few Disney escorts (I guess that's what they were; they just looked really important, with walkie-talkies and stuff), and then realized that Geena Davis was one of the people there! She was looking very casual and down-to-earth in Lee overalls and looked even TALLER than she does in all of her movies. And what natural beauty! I was about 2 feet away from her and could tell that, even without all the stage makeup, Geena is still (of course) totally gorgeous! I made eye contact with Geena briefly and we both smiled politely at each other, then I promptly leaned over to Noelle and whispered (as discreetly as possible)"Noelle, Geena Davis is RIGHT BEHIND YOU. Yes, GEENA DAVIS." Well, my bud caught on and also nonchalantly glanced back and smiled at the star. Then Ms. Davis' group was escorted onto the awaiting boat and another empty boat was launched behind them (for security and privacy reasons, of course). Well, that was exciting enough, but then we were delayed in line AGAIN. The very kind Cast Member informed us that we would have to wait just a few more minutes to board the ride. "It'll just be a moment," she said apologetically. And then very casually: "Mr. Michael Jackson is now coming down the ramp." So we turn and, sure enough, there were a billion security guards marching down the ramp and, sandwiched in between, was a tall figure wrapped in a black Middle-Eastern-looking outfit, black scarf around his head and face, and large black sunglasses. And he was followed closely by 2 children ages 4 and 9(or so). Yes, it was the King of Pop. Once people in line and around the gift shop area realized who was boarding Small World, flashes started popping and fans started yelling. Well, Noelle and I have been going to Disneyland together for a long time now and have made a lot of fun memories there, but now we can actually add our names to the list of those who have sighted celebs in the Magic Kingdom and use this experience for even more Disneyland stories to tell our friends!
