Webmaster's Corner

One of the best ways to increase your sales is to increase the amount of visitors your site receives.

Think of your site as a funnel. The more traffic that comes into the top of the funnel, the more that will end up at priceline.com -- the bottom of the funnel. If you increase the top part, you'll increase the bottom as well.

The following pages will give you some webmaster secrets. Just click on the link below to go to that section.

Search Engine Secrets

One of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure your site is search engine optimized.

Here's a quick look at what search engines need to rank you higher:

To get maximum pull from the search engines, concentrate your efforts on delivering content on an area that you know well and make sure your page code reflects this. Probably the best thing to know about search engines is that they rank pages due to relevance -- this means the more you mention the word people will be searching for in your page -- for instance Priceline.com -- the more it will come up in search engine returns. So make sure to put priceline.com in to the text of your website early and often.

Your pages contain some HTML "spider-bait". Open your code up in notepad or word. For help on how to do this, please refer to your web browser's Help tab. Here is an example of what you will see:

1. TITLE PriceLine.com /TITLE

The title tag is the name of your page. It is also the first place some engines look to see how they should rank you. Think of a few names for your site or travel page and change your title accordingly.

Or you can use the following code and change the section where it says "your site name here":

TITLE YOUR SITE NAME HERE's Link to Priceline.com -- The best way to save! NAME YOUR OWN PRICE for airline tickets, hotel rooms, new cars, home mortgages, home equity loans and refinancing - only at priceline.com. /TITLE

2. META name="description" content="The only buying service in the world where you name your own price for airline tickets, hotels, new autos, home financing and more!"

The meta description tags are used by the search engines to describe your site. Take a few minutes to think how you'd tell others about your site and write it down. Shorter descriptions are usually better. Take this info and place in your meta description tag.

Or you can use the following code and change the section where it says "your site name here":

META name="description" content="YOUR SITE NAME HERE's Link to The only buying service in the world where you name your own price for airline tickets, hotels, new autos, home financing and more!"

3. META name="keywords" content="Priceline, Priceline.com, travel, hotel, William Shatner, Name Your Price, airline tickets, travel, domestic, international, hotels, accommodations, autos, cars, home finance, mortgages, home equity loans, loans, refinancing, refinance, air fares, cheap tickets, hotel rooms, new cars, pricline, pricelne."

The meta keyword tags are what visitors looking for your site would type into the search engines. In priceline's case, it might be travel or new cars. In your case it could be skiing or golf or mining.

A neat trick is to use common misspellings of the words people might use to search for you. For instance, you could use "liceline" as a priceline mistake. Another trick is to pick your hometown or favorite destination city and place this into the code. These proper nouns have a good chance of getting ranked high in search engine returns. Take a few minutes to brainstorm what your visitors would be looking for when they come to your site. What content does your site offer? Then record it in your meta keyword tag.

Or you can use the following code and change the section where it says "your site name here":

META name="keywords" content="YOUR SITE NAME HERE's Link to Priceline, Priceline.com, airline tickets, travel, hotel, travel, travels, William Shatner, Name Your Price, travel, domestic, international, hotels, accommodations, autos, cars, home finance, mortgages, pricelines, priceline.com, travl, travle, air fares, cheap tickets, hotel rooms, new cars, pricline, pricelne."

There are many great sites that can help you to find out what the engines are looking for, but the one that we use is SearchEngineWatch.com. This excellent site will tell you all you need to know and then some.

HTML Guide

One of the great things that has happened with the massive growth of the Internet is that you don't need to write code to have your own webpage anymore. You can download any HTML editor and start cranking out pages. Just go to http://www.download.com and search for HTML editors for your computer platform. Priceline recommends Homesite 4.0 for the pc and BBEdit for the Mac. You can also download trial versions of these products at:
